1. Important Permissions for Standard Users
Problem
If standard users do not have right permissions to the BRAINtastic program folder, then the User Profiles within the program will not be created in the defualt location which is C:\Program files\Brantastic, instead it will be created in the Document and Settings\User\Application Data\Edalive\Braintastic folder. In this case other windows users will not be able to see the users created within the program.
Solution
Windows Permissions:
When BRAINtastic program is first installed on a Windows XP or Windows 2000 system using an administrative account login, the program installs in the C:\Program files\Brantastic folder. The default access for the BRAINtastic folder is for full access by administrative users.
To enable standard users to use the program using its default path, follow the steps below.
Step 1. Login as the Administrator of the computer
Step 2. Install the full program in its default location.
Step 3. After installing the program launch the program once then quit it.
Step 4. Navigate to the "Profiles" folder located within the "BRAINtastic" folder and give "Full Control" to All Users of the computer and apply the changes.
Step 5. Logout as the Administrator and then login as a standard user and start the program.
Note: If Standard users are not given permissions using the steps specified above, then the program will create the product folder that can only be accessed by that user instead of all users (this is located in the Document and Settings\User\Application Data\Edalive\Braintastic folder).
Note that the "Application Data" folder will not be visible under windows explorer if "Do not show hidden files or folders" option is enabled in windows.
2. Installation Instructions (Standalone version).
Problem
How do I install the BRAINtastic Maths program on the local hard drive?
Solution
Both Windows and Macintosh versions are present on the CDROM, however, because of the way the CD is constructed, you will only see the files for your operating system.
Windows Installation:
1. Insert the CD into the CD drive of your computer.
2. The CD should Autorun (start automatically).
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.
Note: It is extremely important that the default installation path of BRAINtastic! is NOT changed. This is so that subsequent installations for BRAINtastic series (e.g. other games) are installed into the same folder. If you do have to change the default installation path, then first refer to the pdf file named "Combining 2 BRAINtastic! installations"
3. If the CD does not autorun, click on the "START" button, then "RUN", then "BROWSE" , then navigate to your CD drive where the BRAINtastic! CD is located. Find the Installer file and click on it, then click " OPEN", then "OK".
This will start the installation process. Once the setup starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.
Mac Classic & OSX:
1. Insert the CD into the CD drive. The CD icon will appear on the desktop of your computer.
2. Double click on the CD icon on the Desktop to open it.
3. Now double-click on the Installer icon to start the installation of the program. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Note: BRAINtastic will be installed into the Applications folder of your system hard drive. So that subsequent installations for the BRAINtastic series (e.g. other games) can find the folder, it is important NOT to move or rename the BRAINtastic folder. If it absolutely MUST be moved, then refer to the file "Combining 2 Installations.pdf"
4. To start the program double click on the program icon on your hard drive.
The software will NOT run from the CD.
3. Combining two BRAINtastic! installations
Problem
I have already got BRAINtastic! program installed on my computer. How do i combine and install a new Brainstatic Game or Module to the existing installation?
Solution
Combining two BRAINtastic! installations:
The installer for each BRAINtastic! title is designed to install into the same location. This means that if two titles are installed then they will be combined and the latest files will be kept.
However to do this we have assumed that each BRAINtastic title is installed into the default location. If this is changed or the BRAINtastic! folder moved after installation then subsequent installations will create a new BRAINtastic! folder and the user will end up with 2 (or more)
BRAINtastic! installations. These can be combined manually by following the instructions below.
Macintosh or Windows
1. Choose the installation that came from the CDROM with the latest date since this will contain the most updated files.
2. Move the Profiles folder to the installation you are keeping. The Profiles folder contains user records. If no Profiles folder exists then this is created the first time BRAINtastic is run.
3. The Product folder contains information about the BRAINtastic titles that have been installed. Each title has folder. Move the products you want to the BRAINtastic folder you are keeping.
4. The Content folder: this contains the actual questions. Note some titles may have 2 or more content modules. Move the content modules you want to the BRAINtastic folder you are keeping.
5. The Games Folder: this contains the Reward game modules. Move the games you want to the BRAINtastic folder you are keeping.
You should now have combined the two installations.
4. How to Add and Remove users ?
Adding User Name
Because BRAINtastic! keeps user records and user settings, it is necessary to first create a user. Only a first name is required, but last name and password can also be entered. See section 1 using BRAINtastic Quickstart. Note: Just leave last name and password fields empty if these are not required.
Adding Users from the "Admin" section
Users can be added from within the "Admin" section. This is most useful for the classroom teacher who wants to enter a whole class of students. Create a user by entering name into the yellow boxes at top of "Admin" screen, then clicking the "Add User" button. This will insert the user into the current group.
See also the document named "importing Users".
Removing Users From a Group
The "Remove User" button at the bottom of the "Admin" screen will remove the selected user(s) from the current group. The user(s) is(are) not deleted from the system. They may be inserted into another group by choosing the "Manage users not in current group..." option from the 'Users" menu.
5. How do I import users?
Importing Users:
In response to requests from schools we have added the ability to import users from a tab- or comma-separated text file. Currently the format of the file is: First Name, Last Name.
Select the "Import Users Option" from the "Global" menu. When users have been imported they can be placed in groups by using the "Add existing users to current group" option from the "Groups" menu.
6. What is the maximum number of users that can be created?
Problem
Why cant I create more than 64 users?
Solution
BRAINtastic! is limited to 64 groups with a maximum of 64 users in each group. A total of 2048 users can be added within the program.
7. How do I export and print user statistics?
Export of Student Statistics:
There is an "Export Stats" button at the bottom of the "User Stats" screen. This will export (in text format) the results shown on the screen.
Printing of User Statistics:
Results, stats, etc, may be printed by using the print screen capabilities of Windows or Mac operating systems.
Windows: Press the Printscreen keyboard key --> Open program like Paint --> Paste --> Print
Macintosh: Use the "Command-Shift-4" key combination to make a copy of a portion of the screen --> Open the "picture" created by this action --> Print.
